The opportunity

ASIO is looking for enthusiastic and motivated Project Managers. You would be part of a team, working under broad direction, to undertake a variety of projects. ASIO's work program is large, diverse and innovative. 

You will use project management principles and practices to deliver business objectives through a project's life cycle. 

  • Information Communication Technology Project Managers: you will be working in a secure, multi-platform and multi-vendor technical environment, so no 2 projects will be the same. 
  • Property, Accommodation and Facilities Project Managers: you will be engaged in all project elements that enable the Organisation to deliver on its mission.

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.

Role responsibilities

We are seeking project management professionals at a range of levels, with the responsibilities commensurate with those levels. 

AE5 Project Support Officers may be required to:

  • Contribute to project support activities.
  • Implement continuous project management process improvement and change within an established framework.
  • Maintain project risk registers, including regular reviews and updates, advising team members if they have been nominated to execute risk treatment, and facilitating project risk workshops.
  • Implement stakeholder communication plans, enhancing customer and stakeholder relationships.
  • Provide administration support including schedule maintenance, monthly reporting, and resource management.

AE6 Project Managers may be required to:

  • Manage small projects or elements of larger projects under the guidance of a senior project manager within an established framework.
  • Work collaboratively by building effective relationships with team members and external stakeholders.
  • Engage with stakeholders and manage expectations to deliver agreed project outcomes.
  • Use initiative and experience to analyse, plan, review and adjust priorities and work activities to meet business outcomes. 

AEE1 Project Managers may be required to:

  • Manage medium to large projects or elements of large complex projects under the guidance of a senior project manager within an established framework.
  • Achieve project outcomes, progress work packages, review team and business performance, and focus on identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. 
  • Work independently in alignment with strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.
  • Engage with stakeholders and manage expectations to deliver agreed project outcomes. 
  • Use people management skills and knowledge to lead a high-performing and cohesive team, including to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development. 

What you will bring

We invite applications from people with one or more of the following:

  • Experience in a variety of project management methodologies e.g. PMBOK, PRINCE2, AGILE, DSDM, and the ability to apply the most appropriate in a project or business environment.
  • Experience in project delivery within an area of ICT or facilities.
  • Experience with project scheduling tools e.g. Microsoft Project.
  • Experience with project and issue tracking tools e.g. Atlassian Jira Software.
  • Experience leading project delivery teams in a dynamic, customer-driven, mission-focused environment.
  • Experience with the Commonwealth complex procurement process, including the tendering process, and managing contracts and vendor relationships.

Qualifications or experience

The following qualifications or experience, while not essential, are desirable:

AE5 Project Support Officer:

  • BSB40920 Certificate IV in Project Management Practice. 
  • Certified Practising Project Practitioner (AIPM Certification) with the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) or the ability to achieve certification. 

AE6 and EL1 Project Manager:

  • BSB50820 Diploma of Project Management or undergraduate qualification in information technology and/or project management. 
  • Certified Practicing Project Manager (CPPM) certification with the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) or the ability to achieve certification. 
  • Axelos PRINCE 2 Practitioner Certification. 
  • Knowledge or experience of project management principles and practices. Experience within the area of ICT is highly regarded.

Location

These positions are predominately located in Canberra, with limited opportunities available in Sydney. Relocation assistance is provided to successful candidates where ASIO requires you to relocate.

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service.
