Back-End Software Engineer (JAVA-MicroServices)

• Manulife Core Engineering and Transformation is seeking a self-motivated Back-End Software Engineer (JAVA-MicroService), who is obsessed with delivering value, is forward-thinking, and excited to see the successful implementation of the products they deliver. They will have experience in designing, developing, testing, maintaining and improving application APIs as a member of a team, works across key data, orchestration, rules and transactional stacks through the entire application and system development life cycle.

We are looking for someone with:   

• Familiarity with agile and DevOps principles, test-driven development, continuous integration, and other approaches to accelerate the delivery of new features 

• Understanding of software development lifecycle 

• Understanding of how technology supports Manulife business strategy 

• Occasionally participates in demos utilizing new tech.; control guidelines required 

• Familiar with modern software architectures and API-driven development 

• Familiar with technologies such as: API Gateways, Messaging, Data Event Streaming, REST, SOAP, Distributed Tracing, Relational and Document Database Interface/SQL 

• Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members; able to coach, participate in code reviews, share skills and methods 

• Works together in a small team with a common purpose, follows rules from team members 

Nice to Haves:    

• Exposure to PaaS and micro-service architectures 

• Exposure to and understanding of Agile scrum methodologies and experience of working in an Agile team 

• Experienced in grasping and explaining high level solution architecture  

• Exposure to and basic understanding of collaboration tools like Slack, Skype, JIRA   

On the job you will:   

• Work closely with software engineers to establish best practices for development, testing and delivery 

• Work closely with other teams to drive innovative solutions to meet business needs 

• Collaborate closely Product Owners and other stakeholders in an Agile environment 

• Research and evaluate emerging technologies 

• Prototype to gain customer insights  

• Proof of Technology to innovate and incorporate new technology 

• Have opportunities to mentor co-op students
