About Unilever

Unilever is one of the largest global fast-moving consumer goods companies that owns some of the world’s much-loved brands such as Dove, Axe, Rexona, Close Up, Pond’s, Clear, Sunsilk, Cream Silk, Breeze, Domex, Magnum, Knorr, Best Foods and more. Our products sold under our many brands are used 2 billion times a day and in over half the households on the planet. We want our business to flourish, and we know that our success depends on others flourishing around us. That is why our purpose is to make sustainable living commonplace, and why sustainable, long-term growth is at the heart of our business model.

What will you be doing?

Supporting the wellbeing and championing the success of the 155,000 people working for us worldwide. Unilever’s HR function is committed to contribute to the Sustainable Living Plan in as many ways as possible. Wherever you’re based in the business, you will gain experience of driving culture change, managing employee relations, developing talented individuals and leaders, turning around the performance of teams and much more. It’s all about shaping our organization from within.

What do we look for?

We need HR people who are mindful and responsive to contexts, audiences and individuals and are inspired to develop colleagues and the capabilities required for our winning business. The role of HR in Unilever as a core strategic business area means we look for people with ambition, an interest in business and the courage to offer creative insights and execute change. Individuals who are able to build relationships and have a talent in influencing and negotiation go a long way.

What will the programme involve?

The three-year, world-class development programme is packed with variety and challenge, with the opportunity of promotion to manager level after 3 years. You’ll develop your individual leadership skills by working on live projects which offer you all the experience you need to become ready for your first management role. Over three years, the scheme will give you a broad exposure to the business. You can be end-to-end responsible to deliver a great employee experience for key employee moments as a People Partner, join in one or our HR Expertise teams (Reward, ER/IR, Learning & Development or Talent) or Business Partnering one of our departments or brands.

  • Before the three years ends, you will get the opportunity to have international work experience as one of your rotations.
  • Support and empowerment: We will support you every step of the way to senior management but much of your progress will be up to you. You will need to be focused and ambitious to get where you want, identifying opportunities and taking responsibility for your own development.
  • During the 3 years of your programme, you will be learning and developing in the rotations you will be doing, having real responsibility and impact. This development is supported with a learning roadmap full of internal and external training focused on developing your individual leadership skills.
  • We have an established tradition of developing our own purpose driven leaders and encourage innovative thinking. Future focused feedback and challenging goals drive innovation and ambition within a performance culture and an inclusive and informal environment. We will push you to achieve your potential and make a big business impact where you learn from the best. Firsthand experience – it is the fastest way to learn.

Since I've been given 3 projects to lead, my day-to-day responsibilities are to look after them. I don't have tasks that merely assist or operationalize, instead I strategize and plan towards the completion of my projects within a given timeline.

There is a balance between operations work and projects. I can propose and work on passion projects.

Pros and cons of working at Unilever Philippines

Pros

  • The company has a good culture. It also provides employees with great benefits along with a good wage.

  • Apart from working with intellectual and capable people, the flexibility of hours is one of the best things about working at Unilever.

  • Unlimited career opportunities including working in multicultural teams and in roles abroad, fast-paced and exciting work environment where you are a maker of the leading edge products.

  • The company's culture in the office is vibrant while serious. Most of the time people are focusing on their work and the deadlines they need to meet.

  • There are a lot of workshops that I can enroll for at Unilever. Workshops that are mainly focused on hard and technical skills that I can use at work.

Cons

    • High volume of work.

    • As a management trainee, the constant moving from one role to another, not allowing myself to fully grow and establish myself in a role and mastering the ins and outs of it.

    • Because it's such a large organization - the bureaucracy.

    • Due to it being one of the bests in the industry especially when it comes to finance the expectations might sometimes be too high.

    • Living in Manila one is not immune to the horrible traffic of the country, making the commute to and from work much worse than it should be.
