About Unilever

Unilever is one of the largest global fast-moving consumer goods companies that owns some of the worldโ€™s much-loved brands such as Dove, Axe, Rexona, Close Up, Pondโ€™s, Clear, Sunsilk, Cream Silk, Breeze, Domex, Magnum, Knorr, Best Foods and more. Our products sold under our many brands are used 2 billion times a day and in over half the households on the planet. We want our business to flourish, and we know that our success depends on others flourishing around us. That is why our purpose is to make sustainable living commonplace, and why sustainable, long-term growth is at the heart of our business model.

What will you be doing?

Unilever Operations (UniOps) touches every area of the business providing internal core services and enabling Unilever to respond to the big technological challenges all businesses face these days; for example, the buying trends of millennials or the need to be agile in a fast-changing world.

The range of opportunities available in UniOps is vast, and some of our current future leadersโ€™ placements have included Sustainable Business & IT, Customer Development (Sales), Information and Analytics and Data Engineering just to name a few. We aim to provide experiences which deliver the relevant expertise for your chosen stream, as well as the commercial experience needed to develop future leaders that will enable Unilever to win in the marketplace.

Our purpose is to transform the way we make a difference to the lives of our people worldwide, and to power a consumer-centric, future ready, and data intelligent business through disruption, digital innovation, and agile acceleration.

You could be working with our technology partners like Microsoft, Amazon, and SAP, driving the delivery of a global programme, or working with niche technology start-ups and industry innovators to solve business and sustainability challenges.

What do we look for?

We are proud to offer three streams to allow future leaders to develop varying levels of expertise whilst also accelerating their business acumen, commercial knowledge and leadership potential.

Cross-functional Stream: In this stream we look to develop future leaders who are able to think about the experiences we provide our employees, our consumers, our customers and the business we work with on a day-to-day basis. Amongst others, we will provide experiences anywhere between our customer development teams and employee experience, covering everything from the physical workplace and the technologies used within it, to the support services we offer our employees to make their day to day lives simpler.

Technology Stream: In this stream we look to develop a genuine passion for business, brands and technology as well as being excited by digital developments. Amongst others, we will provide experiences in cyber security, cloud computing, data and analytics and implementing new technology developments at a global scale.

Data and Analytics Stream: In this stream you will develop deep expertise in data and work with cutting edge technologies in the cloud, allowing you to bring actionable insights to our business which will allow Unilever to grow, be more competitive and make sustainable living commonplace. You will be immersed in experiences across data analytics, data science and data engineering, leveraging the vast scale of information available at Unilever.

What will the programme involve?

The three-year, world-class development programme is packed with variety and challenge, with the opportunity of promotion to manager level after 3 years. Youโ€™ll develop your individual leadership skills by working on live projects which offer you all the experience you need to become ready for your first management role. Over three years, you will cover four different placements and an out of function rotation in our Cross-function Stream and Technology Stream and be immersed in two extended placements designed for depth of expertise in the Data and Analytics Steam.

Support and empowerment: We will support you every step of the way to senior management but much of your progress will be up to you. You will need to be focused and ambitious to get where you want, identifying opportunities and taking responsibility for your own development.

During the 3 years of your programme, you will be learning and developing in the rotations you will be doing, having real responsibility and impact. This development is supported with a learning roadmap full of internal and external training focused on developing your individual leadership skills.

We have an established tradition of developing our own purpose driven leaders and encourage innovative thinking. Future focused feedback and challenging goals drive innovation and ambition within a performance culture and an inclusive and informal environment. We will push you to achieve your potential and make a big business impact where you learn from the best. Firsthand experience โ€“ it is the fastest way to learn.

Since I've been given 3 projects to lead, my day-to-day responsibilities are to look after them. I don't have tasks that merely assist or operationalize, instead I strategize and plan towards the completion of my projects within a given timeline.

Pros and cons of working at Unilever Philippines

Pros

  • The company has a good culture. It also provides employees with great benefits along with a good wage.

  • Apart from working with intellectual and capable people, the flexibility of hours is one of the best things about working at Unilever.

  • Unlimited career opportunities including working in multicultural teams and in roles abroad, fast-paced and exciting work environment where you are a maker of the leading edge products.

  • The company's culture in the office is vibrant while serious. Most of the time people are focusing on their work and the deadlines they need to meet.

  • There are a lot of workshops that I can enroll for at Unilever. Workshops that are mainly focused on hard and technical skills that I can use at work.

Cons

    • High volume of work.

    • As a management trainee, the constant moving from one role to another, not allowing myself to fully grow and establish myself in a role and mastering the ins and outs of it.

    • Because it's such a large organization - the bureaucracy.

    • Due to it being one of the bests in the industry especially when it comes to finance the expectations might sometimes be too high.

    • Living in Manila one is not immune to the horrible traffic of the country, making the commute to and from work much worse than it should be.
