It is particularly rewarding to see how a design goes from an idea on a piece of paper.

The beauty of my role is that much of the work I undertake is data and research-driven.

Western Power is a utility company at the end of the day, and there are many opportunities to make a career here working in non-engineering disciplines as well. Experience and passion count for a lot.

The coolest thing about my job is putting your theoretical skills into practice. Even as a graduate, I have the opportunity to work on significant projects which are in some way connected to different disciplines.

I especially enjoy being able to work or test on assets that work 24/7 to power the lives of our community.

I am mainly involved in the short-medium term designs at our zone substations.

Our designed telecommunication networks ensure uninterrupted communication between our field equipment and the Network Control Centre, fostering reliable electricity supply and rapid response to any arising issues.

The best things about Western Power include the variety of work, the support from your team with regards to training, knowledge sharing, and flexible working options.

Don’t be afraid to fail! Some of the most successful people in history got to where they are now by experiencing and learning from their failures.

Western Power is both a supportive and flexible work environment, with knowledgeable people who are willing to grow and mentor you.

I love that my job still requires an application of electrical engineering theory – in some roles I have definitely had to dust off the old university textbooks and brush up on some concepts. The application of this theory and realising it out in the field is very rewarding.

I can choose what problems to work on and how to undertake solving them on a day to day basis.
